The brief
Our Scotland team have been busy carrying out expert hard surface repairs to a number of stone pillars outside Boroughmuir High School, a secondary school based in the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh.
The school, although founded in 1904 was rebuilt at a new site in 2018 on the grounds of an old brewery, and shortly after opening was awarded Building of the Year in the Architectural Association Awards. As such, any and all repairs were to be handled carefully by technicians who would prioritise maintaining the look and feel of the building.
We were delighted to be asked to carry out stone repairs on behalf of partner Graham Construction, who trusted the SD Team to tackle any deterioration while also preserving the stonework and causing minimal disruption to students and faculty using the building.
Why are these repairs important?
It’s vital that schools and education facilities keep on top of repairs and undergo regular maintenance to provide safe, clean environments that protect pupils and staff from injury.
Not only that, but students tend to learn better in facilities that are well looked after and orderly. Visible damage can be distracting and negatively affect concentration, while a neglected building can make pupils as well as teachers feel less motivated and less valued.
We are all more effective and happier when working in a safe, comfortable environment and ultimately a well-maintained school builds trust with parents but also ensures that the building is compliant with health, safety and accessibility regulations.
The results
Our technicians are trained to colour-match, recreate textures and finishes, and blend any repair into the surrounding surface so that, at normal viewing distance, it is very difficult to see where damage existed.
In this instance the team did a fantastic job of tidying up imperfections and making sure that all stone pillars were flawless and consistent with one another, as seen below.
Why work with SD?
Regular maintenance prevents small issues from becoming major, expensive repairs. Whether it’s a school, hospital, hotel or residential property, preventive care extends the life of buildings and fixtures, saving money in the long run.
Our team regularly works in sensitive environments such as schools and universities, where it’s important that we work discreetly, safely and effectively on all building repairs. We aim to complete as much of our work outside of school hours or during school holidays as possible to minimise disruption and prioritise safety, and we are expertly trained in everything from brick and stonework repairs to sealant application, metalwork and glass polishing.
