To achieve this, they commissioned SD Marine Interiors to create dedicated sleep lounges onboard its Pride of Rotterdam and Pride of Hull vessels. Working across both ships, SD’s Marine Interiors team transformed existing onboard spaces into the new lounges, featuring 36 sleep recliners.
The transformation also included:
- New flooring
- Updated lighting
- Individual lockers
- New bulkheads
- Decoration and finishing works
A complex project
The complex nature of the job meant the team were faced with a number of challenges.
A key part of the process was preparing the space for the new seating. The existing sloping floor had to be flattened before the recliners could be installed so that there was a level and practical environment for passengers.
One of the biggest challenges was completing the work while both vessels were in service. This required careful planning, coordination and efficient working practices to minimise disruption to passengers.
The team also had to work around a number of practical considerations, including waste routes, storage space and working hours. It was important to P&O Ferries that the installation caused as little disruption as possible to day-to-day operations so, to help keep the work discreet and minimise the impact on passengers and staff, the team used hoardings to screen off the installation area.
In addition, the team also supported P&O Ferries in designing the most efficient layout for the lounges. This meant maximising the amount of seating without breaching safety restrictions, such as escape route widths.
The finished lounges
Despite these challenges, SD Marine Interiors successfully delivered the lounges in three weeks, combining practical design with high-quality finishing to create attractive new overnight accommodation for passengers. The completed spaces demonstrate how existing areas onboard can be transformed to create additional passenger facilities.
