United Kingdom

As part of the SD group of companies, we provide a full range of marine interior design and build services to cruise operators worldwide, and will now be strengthening our offering in the marine sector with the addition of Simon at the helm.

Having spent over a decade working in the marine outfitting industry, Simon Dawkins’ move to SD follows his role as Director of Sales for Trimline, where he led the sales and marketing division and advised on all commercial aspects of the business for a number of years.

Nick Jones, Managing Director at SD, said on the appointment: “Simon is an extremely well-respected and experienced figure in the cruise industry and I can think of no better person to be at the forefront of our marine interiors outfit. He’s worked with some of the best names in the business, and we’re delighted to have his expertise on board.

“He already has ambitious plans for the marine interiors division and I look forward to seeing what the coming months bring for this team.”

SD Marine Interiors are supported by over 120 full-time hard surface repair technicians, seven distribution sites across the UK and a wider team of over 200 providing sealants and outfitting services for cruise operators including Windstar, AIDA and Phoenix Reisen.

On his new role, Simon said: “I’m delighted to be coming into the fold here at SD – this is a pioneering business in the repairs and outfitting industry and I’m looking forward to forging a new path with the support of Nick and the team behind me.

“We’re expecting to add some new faces to the marine interiors team very shortly, and given that the wider SD team is very focused on sustainable methods of construction, I’m eager to explore new opportunities within the cruise sector for us to take as green an approach as possible. Everybody wants a more sustainable future but there is still work to be done, and I’m keen to make that a top priority for the business going forward.

“In the meantime, we have a number of exciting projects lined up and will be in Miami this June for my inaugural Interiors Expo with SD, which I’m very much looking forward to.”

Launched in 1973, SD teams and Cosmetic Repairs originated as a family run business in Somerset that specialised in the supply and application of sealant.

Since then, it has steadily grown to be one of the largest finishing and repairs specialists in the UK with nine offices across England, Scotland and Wales.

In 2019, the SD team took its experience and knowledge of sealants, resins and hard surface repairs and developed a leading outfitting service for the marine sector, expanding to include a full range of marine interior trades and services.

This large event is recognised to be a networking opportunity for the marine industry and will give SD a chance to connect with key decision-makers and build valuable new relationships within the industry.

SD Marine Interior’s Gareth Preston will be joined by SD’s Managing Director Nick Jones along with fellow marine experts, Paul Thomas, Kim Sealey, Steve Shaw, Kevin Pearn, Val Corneby, Tony Webb, Chris Kirkland and Vince Johnson for their final event of the year.

The team will have the opportunity to showcase the business’ complete turnkey service, which includes electrical, hard surface repair, French polishing, upholstery, as well as painting and decorating for both refurbished and new build ships.

Before heading to London, Gareth Preston said “We are thrilled to be attending the Cruise Ship Interiors London at the end of the month. We have had a fantastic twelve months of travelling all around the world to visit some of the very best people and businesses in the industry. The team have been showcasing our fantastic expertise all year, which in turn has led to the development of many great relationships and business opportunities for 2023.”

“Paul and I will travel to the Cruise Ship Interiors on the 29th of November to get everything set up ready for what promises to be a great exhibit. SD’s stand will display our full product range, from in-depth surveys, design, draughting and drawings to project management and much more.

“In addition, we hope to show clients that by choosing cosmetic repair, a business is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability, as repairing damaged items rather than replacing them is generally best for the planet.”

Beyond this, SD Team is a proud sponsor of the ‘Shipyard Team of the Year’ category at the Cruise Ship Interiors Awards 2022. In a community where working together is essential to the success of all projects, this award will recognise those people who consistently excel and exceed expectations. The award takes place on the 1st of December and the winners will be announced during an evening ceremony.

“We are very proud to be sponsoring the Cruise Ship Interiors Awards and SD is very excited to be celebrating the very best in the cruise industry. We look forward to congratulating the winner!”

The SD Marine Interiors division is sending its experienced professionals to exhibit their full range of marine interior trades and other services at the Hamburg SMM Expo in September after the department has seen an impressive year of growth.

The event will give SD the chance to promote its offering to maritime industry professionals from all over the world. The team will get the opportunity to host face-to-face meetings on the exhibition ground as well as visit high-profile trade conferences.

Marine Director Gareth Preston will be joined in Hamburg by fellow specialists Paul Thomas and Kim Sealey, giving SD Marine a chance to further strengthen relationships with other businesses and generate incredible business opportunities.

The marine experts will showcase the business’ complete turnkey service, which includes electrical, hard surface repair, French polishing, upholstery, as well as painting and decorating for both refurbished and new build ships.

Gareth Preston said “After attending the Sea Trade Cruise Global in April this year, we were in high spirits. The team collectively decided to continue networking at these large events which will allow us to get the Marine team seen and show off SD’s incredible service offering.

“The marine department at SD has significantly grown this past year and we can only see that continuing into 2023. I am proud of our marine team and all that has been accomplished this year. We are looking forward to networking with a variety of key people within the industry at the Hamburg event.”

In November, the SD team will be attending the Cruise Ship Interiors Expo in London. This event will cater exclusively to the European cruise interior design industry and give the team a chance to meet with Europe’s most esteemed cruise lines, designers, and shipyards working on major refurbishment and newbuild projects.

The new launch will complement our existing Group website and provide easy to access essential information about SD’s marine service, offering a streamlined, modern design with crisp functionality. With the new site, we aim to help the cruise, ferry and offshore sectors make well-informed decisions about their refurbishment or cabin repair project needs.

It will also highlight the eco-sustainability efforts that SD Marine is making, including a pledge that explores ways to reduce both their own and their clients’ carbon footprint – from using specially selected non-toxic solvents and adhesives to waste reduction and simply repairing items instead of replacing them, and much more.

Nick Jones, Director of SD said “This new site will be a great portfolio for SD’s Marine Division. It will help us communicate what we do; how we do it; and the value which we can bring to our customers. We look forward to continuing to develop content and sharing the latest news from our Marine team.”

Since SD brought its experience and knowledge of sealants, resins, adhesives and hard surface repairs to the marine sector, the Division has become a prominent force in the vessel refurbishment and cabin repair industry. Having full-time and expert on-site management and tradesmen to hand means that our team are extremely reliable, with many clients returning for projects.

SD’s marine experts will continue to attend conferences and industry events worldwide, where stakeholders across the various cruise sectors gather for networking opportunities and help us to continue to learn more about new and exciting industry developments.

The SeaTrade Cruise Global conference is an iconic industry event and focal meeting point where stakeholders across the various cruise sectors gather for networking opportunities and to learn more about new industry developments.

After a three-year absence due to Covid-19, the event brought together thousands of cruise executives, decision-makers, destination representatives and leading industry brands. This gave the SD team a perfect chance to exhibit their full range of marine services and show hundreds of industry leaders that they are a prominent force in vessel refurbishment and cabin repair projects.

Throughout the three-day networking and promotional event, the team met with numerous industry executives to discuss current development projects and future business opportunities.

This year’s event offered a matchmaking service whereby the SD team could create a digital profile and contact prospective meeting attendees online ahead of time, which served as a brilliant way to keep things organised and manage time efficiently.

Not only did the team leave with new and potential business, they also found it a rewarding experience which gave them a chance to really showcase SD’s services face to face.

Marine Director, Gareth Preston said: “This event gave us a chance to meet new, likeminded and key contacts while also reconnecting with those we have previously built relationships with. The team worked really hard to ensure everything ran smoothly and that overall it was a highly successful event.

We were able to exhibit new products and show the fantastic work SD has accomplished in 2021. We are now in the process of catching up on a few new leads and looking forward to building several long-term partnerships. As always, we will continue to further develop our services but feel lucky that SD have had such a great start to the year.”

Next month, the SD team will be attending the Cruise Ship Interiors Expo on 7th – 8th June at the Miami Beach Convention Centre. This event will bring together leading cruise lines and shipyards to meet with exhibiting designers, architects, outfitters, and interiors suppliers from across the cruise industry community.

SD will be attending the Seatrade Cruise exhibition that will run from the 26th – 28th of April. This will see SD Group’s Marine division travelling 4,000 miles to showcase its services after another year of impressive business growth.

Marine Director Gareth Preston will be joined in Miami by fellow specialists Val Corneby, Paul Thomas, Steve Shaw and Kim Sealey, giving SD Marine a chance to further strengthen relationships with other businesses and generate incredible business opportunities.

The marine experts will showcase the business’ complete turnkey service, which includes electrical, hard surface repair, French polishing, upholstery, as well as painting and decorating for both refurbished and new build ships.

Gareth Preston said: “We are all so excited to be attending the Seatrade Cruise Exhibition in Miami. This will give us a chance to show all the amazing work we have done in 2021 and how we will continue to develop in 2022.”

Having attended the Cruise Ship Interiors Expo in November 2021 at the Miami Beach Convention Centre for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, Gareth and his team know the value of attending such major cruise events: “Following the success of our attendance at the Expo in Miami Beach, we all feel more confident as it was a very rewarding experience for the SD team, and gave our marine experts a chance to really showcase our services on a face to face basis – which we have missed during the pandemic. We are really looking forward to networking with many like-minded and key people within the industry.

“This time around, we have lots of new products to exhibit to the market and we aren’t stopping there, as we continue to further develop. We’re very lucky at SD to have had a great year in business, and this feels like the perfect way to celebrate and get ready for new and exciting challenges ahead.”

The conference provides a gateway for interior designers, architects, outfitters, shipyards and interior suppliers to meet with Europe’s ocean, river and expedition cruise line market working on major refurbishment and newbuild projects. It is a follow up event to the Cruise Ship Interiors Expo America which took place in Miami this November, and which SD were delighted to attend.

The London event, held at the ExCel Centre, gave our marine team a great opportunity to meet with key members of the cruise community who couldn’t make it to the US or who are largely based in Europe and, much like November, it was a welcome change to be able to meet with colleagues and suppliers in person after a rocky 18 months for the industry.

Marine Director Gareth Preston was joined by fellow specialists Paul Thomas and Val Corneby at the conference, who had a chance to network and discuss their complete turn key service, which includes electrical, hard surface repair, French polishing, upholstery, painting & decorating for both refurbished and new build ships.

On attending the event, Marine Director Gareth said: “We’ve had a brilliant time at the UK leg of the Cruise Ship Interiors Expo and it gave us a chance to meet with so many suppliers and contractors that we might otherwise never have met or only spoken to online. We were also able to have some really promising meetings with designers and product owners at the show that have given us a real boost for what’s to come in 2022.

“Watch this space, but it looks like the next 12 months could be a very exciting time both for SD Marine and the cruise industry at large!”
