How the SD Team did it:
Rather than replacing large sections of the floor, the team carefully repaired the missing areas using new tiles that were individually cut by hand to match the exact dimensions of the original tiles.
The real challenge came in replicating the appearance of the aged surface. The replacement tiles needed to look as though they had been part of the building since its construction, matching the subtle variations, tones and signs of wear found across the existing floor.
SD Team technician Wayne expertly mixed colours on site by eye, carefully building up layers of pigment to recreate the distinctive shades and weathered appearance of the original tiles.
For areas where the historic tiles had developed a distressed, faded finish over time, Wayne replicated the effect by layering different colours and finishes to achieve the same aged, washed-out appearance.
The result was a restoration that blended seamlessly with the existing floor, preserving the historic character of Stephenson Memorial Hall while ensuring the repaired areas were virtually indistinguishable from the original tiles.
Wayne’s exceptional workmanship received high praise from both the client and the conservation team, who were amazed by the level of detail and accuracy achieved in replicating the historic surface.
